Watertown Orthodontics For Children
Although there’s no exact age for a child to begin orthodontic treatment, the American Association of Orthodontists has recommended that all children have their first orthodontic evaluation by around the age of seven. We agree! By this stage in their development, most children will have a good mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth. This makes it easier for our doctor to diagnose any tooth and jaw issues before they have the chance to become more serious. When we have the opportunity to initiate this kind of early, or interceptive, treatment, we will often be able to:
-correct and guide the growth of the child’s jaw in order to help permanent teeth grow in straight
-regulate the width of the upper and lower arches
-create more space for crowded teeth
-correct thumb- or finger-sucking habits
-help improve minor speech problems
-reduce or eliminate the need for permanent tooth extractions later in life
It can be difficult for parents to know when or if a child needs to visit the orthodontist, but there are a few things to look for that could indicate the need for an orthodontic evaluation, including:
-losing teeth earlier or later than normal
-difficulties with chewing or biting
-finger or thumb-sucking
-crowded or misplaced teeth
-jaws that pop or make other sounds when opening and closing
-teeth that come together abnormally
-teeth that don’t come together at all
-jaws and teeth that aren’t proportionate to the rest of the face
-front teeth that are crowded from around age seven or eight

Watertown Orthodontics For Teens
If your teen is in need of orthodontic treatment, you may be feeling anxious about the time, commitment, and finances involved. Our team is here to help! Orthodontic treatment today is more comfortable and less obvious than it once was, and we’re dedicated to providing families with high-quality treatment that fits every budget. We offer a variety of payment options to meet your needs.
One of the questions we hear most often from teen patients is, “how long will I need to be in braces?” While there’s no concrete answer for how long a patient will need to wear braces or an aligner, there are a few key factors that can play a part in total treatment time.
Early treatment—Early treatment allows us to monitor the growth of the jaw and recommend further orthodontic treatment if necessary. Not every child will need early orthodontic treatment. In some cases, a wait-and-see approach may be recommended, or we may choose to hold off until a patient is older before beginning treatment.
What it is that needs correction—The amount of treatment needed to correct a problem will determine how long the process takes. Because every patient reacts to treatment in their own way, total treatment times will also vary based on how well and how quickly the body responds.
Your teen—Teens play a big role in their own treatment! It’s important that they follow our instructions and recommendations to care for their appliance. They must also maintain an excellent oral hygiene routine. Staying compliant will help keep treatment times to a minimum.
Modern orthodontic treatment is no longer limited to traditional braces, although the updated versions are sleeker and more subtle than ever before. Along with metal braces, our practice offers ceramic braces and Invisalign clear aligners. Clauss Orthodontics has a treatment option to fit every lifestyle and personality.
Watertown Orthodontics For Adults
Orthodontics aren’t just for kids and teens. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, about 1 in every 4 current orthodontic patients is actually over the age of 18! This increase in adult orthodontic treatment is down to a few different factors. As we get older, we often begin to gain a better understanding of how important oral health is to our overall health. It may also be the first chance an adult has had to afford the time or financial commitment that comes with improving their smile, or they could be looking to complete or redo treatment they had in their younger years.
Some of the biggest issues we see adults in our office for are:
-a “bad” bite, or malocclusion, causing the teeth to fit together incorrectly
-teeth that are crowded or spaced far apart, increasing the risk for tooth decay or gum disease
-abnormal jaw pain
-pressure caused by crooked teeth
-the desire for a healthier mouth and a more confident smile!
It’s not unusual for adults to feel unsure about wearing traditional metal braces. Fortunately, we have a number of different orthodontic options that are comfortable, discreet, and customized to meet the individual needs of every patient. For example, ceramic braces and clear aligner systems like Invisalign offer nearly invisible straightening and Invisalign aligners offer an incredible amount of flexibility for busy adults who prefer a more subtle approach to treatment.
Clauss Orthodontics knows that adults will have different orthodontic needs than children and teens, requiring a different level of attention and care. We have an experienced and talented team ready and willing to work with you to ensure that you and your family receive only the most appropriate treatments. Your needs will always be met with understanding and respect from us!
